How to Convert HEIC to PNG — Lossless Quality, Batch-Ready, No Uploads

Convert iPhone HEIC photos to PNG without quality loss or uploads. Why PNG beats JPG for editing, stickers and transparency — plus bulk conversion steps.

How-to for offline tools. Every step happens on your device.

Every iPhone since the iPhone 7 shoots HEIC by default — and every Windows PC, older Android, web form and CMS treats it like a foreign object. Most "HEIC to JPG" advice solves the acceptance problem, but converting to JPG bakes in another generation of lossy compression before your photo has even been edited once.

Converting HEIC to PNG is the better move whenever quality matters more than file size: editing masters, design assets, stickers, screenshots of documents, anything that will be re-saved multiple times. Here's how to do it — for one photo or three hundred — without uploading anything.

Why convert to PNG instead of JPG?

HEIC → PNGHEIC → JPG
CompressionLossless — pixels preserved exactlyLossy — second compression on top of HEIC's
Re-editing safetyIdeal master: re-save without degradationDegrades further on every edit cycle
TransparencySupported (alpha channel)Not supported
File sizeLarger (typically 2–5× JPG)Small
Best forEditing, archiving, design, stickers, texturesSharing, uploading, email

The rule of thumb: PNG is a working format, JPG is a delivery format. Convert HEIC → PNG once, keep it as your master, then export JPG/WebP copies for wherever they need to go. For the deeper format trade-offs, see Pick the Right Image Format.

Step by step: HEIC to PNG in your browser

1. Open the Bulk Image Converter

Go to the Bulk Image Converter. It detects iPhone HEIC files by their actual content — not just the extension — so .HEIC, .heif and even misnamed files are handled correctly.

2. Drop your photos

Drag one image or your entire camera-roll export onto the dropzone. Mixed formats are fine — HEIC, JPG and PNG can ride in the same batch, each converted to your chosen output. Everything is decoded locally via WebAssembly; if you want proof, disconnect your Wi-Fi first — the conversion still runs.

3. Select PNG as the output format

In the options panel, set the output format to PNG. That's the whole configuration — no quality slider needed, because PNG is lossless: the decoder's output pixels are encoded exactly.

4. Process and download

Press process. Each result appears with its dimensions and size; download individually or grab the whole batch as a ZIP. Filenames carry over — IMG_4032.HEIC becomes IMG_4032.png.

Batch-converting a whole camera roll

The same four steps scale to hundreds of files: select all in your exported folder (Ctrl+A), drop, convert, download the ZIP. There's no file-count cap — the limit is your device's memory, so for very large exports, work in folders of a few hundred at a time. Because nothing uploads, a full photo library conversion costs zero bandwidth and works on a plane.

If you specifically need JPG output as well (for sharing), run the same batch a second time with JPG selected — or read the complete HEIC conversion guide for the format-by-format decision table.

My PNG files are huge — now what?

PNG trades size for fidelity, and a 12MP photo becomes 10–20MB as PNG. That's expected and fine for masters. When you need deliverable copies:

  1. Share/upload versions: convert the PNGs to JPG or WebP with the same converter, or shrink originals directly with the PNG Compressor
  2. Oversized dimensions: if the photo will only ever be viewed at screen size, resize first with the Bulk Image Resizer — a 4000px → 1600px step cuts PNG size ~6×
  3. Exact-size requirements: for portal uploads, target a KB limit with the exact-size compression workflow

FAQ

Is HEIC → PNG conversion lossless?

The PNG encoding is lossless, so no additional quality is lost. Note that HEIC itself is a lossy camera format — the PNG preserves exactly what the HEIC decoded to, which is the maximum fidelity available from that file.

Does Windows support HEIC natively?

Windows 10/11 can open HEIC only after installing paid codec extensions from the Microsoft Store — and many apps still can't. Converting to PNG/JPG in the browser sidesteps the codec problem entirely.

Can I keep transparency when converting HEIC to PNG?

Yes — PNG fully supports alpha. Note that iPhone camera photos don't carry transparency; it matters when converting HEIC graphics (exported stickers, app assets) rather than camera shots.

Why did my photo get bigger after converting to PNG?

HEIC is a highly efficient lossy codec; PNG stores pixels uncompressed-in-effect. Bigger file, zero further loss. If size matters more than fidelity for that copy, use JPG or WebP instead.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere during conversion?

No. HEIC decoding and PNG encoding happen inside your browser tab via WebAssembly — zero network requests during processing, verifiable in DevTools' Network panel.
